The Truth Behind the Yellow Waves of Coreopsis

Source: Women's Generation (Please let me go home, I beg you)

Hi everyone!

Have you ever been walking or driving

and seen beautiful yellow waves adorning the roadsides?

They're flowers that are very common on the streets these days.

At first, I wasn't sure if they were cosmos,

but I wondered, "Were there yellow cosmos?" so I looked it up.

"Coreopsis"

Geum (Gold) + Gye (Chicken) + Guk (Chrysanthemum)

The name was given because its appearance is as flashy as a rooster's comb!

Kind of absurd, right? To think such a pretty flower is compared to a comb!!

The English name is even more absurd!

Koris (Flea) + Opsis (Appearance)

It's named that because the seeds look like fleas!

I thought it was truly beautiful how it painted the streets in gold,

but then I found out a shocking fact T_T

Namely... that Coreopsis is an invasive species!!

Coreopsis has strong reproductive and survival capabilities,

and it's said that native creatures in our country don't consider it a tasty food source.

Because of this, it spreads rapidly and pushes out native plants T_T

Coreopsis is originally a flower native to North America,

and it is known to have been introduced to Korea in the 1920s for ornamental and landscaping purposes.

In the 1970s and 80s, when national land development for roads and rivers was active, it was planted extensively because it was beautiful and cheap.

Also, during the Four Major Rivers Project, to create trails along the Nakdong River,

they created these beautiful Coreopsis colonies ^^;;

To think there was such a story behind those beautiful yellow waves...

The flowers aren't to blame, but it seems a decision from local governments is needed to protect our native plants.

Thank you for reading ^^
