(Later Three Kingdoms Period) The Impact of the Battle of Gongsan on the Korean Peninsula.gif

The commanders of the allied forces at the Battle of Gongsan were:

Goryeo Vanguard: Gang Gong-hwon, Son Haeng, Yeon Ju

Goryeo Main Force: Wang Geon, Shin Sung-gyeom, Kim Rak, Jeon I-gap, Jeon Ui-gap, Jeon Rak, Ho Ui, Kim Cheol

Silla Local Gentry Support Force: Hwangbo Neung-jang.

The vanguard was a unit stationed in Yeongju, Gyeongbuk,

and participated with 10,000 troops gathered under Commander-in-Chief Gang Gong-hwon.

The main force was the Goryeo central army from Kaesong, and under the command of Wang Geon,

5,000 direct elite cavalry and 7 A-tier generals participated.

The Silla support force was the army of Hwangbo Neung-jang, a local powerful clan leader from Yeongcheon, Gyeongbuk.

These gathered top-tier generals and troops

were completely wiped out, swallowed by Gyeon Hwon's god-tier strategies involving ambushes, surprise attacks, and encirclement.

Most of the high-ranking commanders were also killed in action.

Of the two units that broke away and retreated mid-battle, Son Haeng was killed,

but Gang Gong-hwon, Yeon Ju, and Silla's Hwangbo Neung-jang survived.

On the other hand, the Goryeo main force, which was surrounded and annihilated by the Later Baekje army in the final engagement,

saw 4,930 of its 5,000 troops wiped out, with only 70 cavalry surviving.

All seven commanders except for Wang Geon were killed.

Wang Geon barely escaped thanks to a clever plan by Shin Sung-gyeom,

and after being pursued by the Later Baekje army for nearly two months, he finally returned to Kaesong.

Afterward, he confided in Choi Eung that he felt fear and bewilderment all day long,

showing signs of PTSD.

By perfectly executing the raid on Seorabeol and the subsequent Battle of Gongsan, Later Baekje

succeeded in turning Silla into a semi-vassal state,

cut off Daeya Fortress and Gangju from the Goryeo mainland,

and wiped out Goryeo's influence in western Gyeongbuk in one fell swoop.

Furthermore, starting from the Battle of Gongsan, Later Baekje began to absolutely wreck Goryeo.

After Wang Geon barely crawled back to Kaesong, he and Gyeon Hwon

even exchanged letters and had a total flame war.

However, there was a butterfly effect far more important than what has been described so far:

Yu Geum-pil began to take a full-scale role on the anti-Baekje front.

Yu Geum-pil had originally been responsible for the northern front,

hunting down barbarians and training his own light cavalry unit composed of them,

known as the Jebeon Light Cavalry.

But as A-tier commanders and elite troops were slaughtered at Gongsan

and an unprecedented crisis of national survival arrived,

Yu Geum-pil stepped up as the Commander-in-Chief of the anti-Baekje front,

and starting from the year after the Battle of Gongsan, he began smashing the heads of countless Later Baekje soldiers.
