[Exclusive] National Tax Service Slaps Actor Ji Chang-wook with Billions of Won in Taxes After 'Intensive' Audit
It has been revealed that the National Tax Service (NTS) recently conducted an intensive tax audit on actor Ji Chang-wook, the lead in the movie 'Gunche,' and collected billions of won in additional taxes.
It is understood that the trigger was the establishment and operation of his own agency, similar to actors Lee Yi-kyung and Lee Min-ki.
According to industry sources on the 2nd, the 2nd Investigation Bureau of the Seoul Regional Tax Office launched an 'irregular' (special) tax audit on actor Ji Chang-wook around March, conducting an intensive investigation over a period of ten-plus days.
At the time, the NTS reportedly closely examined the timing of revenue recognition for his domestic and international entertainment activities, the legality of the appearance fee settlement process, and the expense documentation provided through his agency and related corporations.
Subsequently, during the tax verification process, the NTS reportedly detected circumstances where taxes were evaded or improperly handled, leading to the collection of billions of won in taxes.
A tax industry official cautioned against overinterpretation, stating, "I understand that while the tax filings were made based on the belief that these were reasonable expenses incurred for entertainment activities, the tax authorities viewed them as personal expenditures or expenses with unclear eligibility under tax law and thus taxed them."
The official continued, pointing out, "Whenever reports of tax audit collections emerge, actors almost always use the same excuse: 'a difference in tax interpretation' or 'an accounting error.' These are nothing more than lame excuses."
This is because the fact that a large amount of tax was collected as a result of the audit serves as evidence that the corporation's expense processing standards deviated significantly from standard taxation criteria.
Meanwhile, this publication attempted to contact actor Ji Chang-wook's agency several times regarding this matter, but they did not respond.
