It has been revealed that a significant number of tax evasion reports received by the National Tax Service (NTS) Real Estate Tax Evasion Reporting Center are concentrated in the Capital Region, including Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Incheon.

According to data submitted by the NTS to the office of Representative Cha Gyu-keun of the Rebuilding Korea Party, a member of the National Assembly's Strategy and Finance Committee, a total of 780 reports were received from the launch of the Real Estate Tax Evasion Reporting Center in November last year until the end of March this year.

Among these, 633 cases were received from areas under the jurisdiction of the Seoul Regional Tax Office, the Jungbu Regional Tax Office, and the Incheon Regional Tax Office, accounting for 81.2% of the total.

By region, the Seoul office had the most with 322 cases, followed by the Incheon office with 147 cases and the Jungbu office with 164 cases. In contrast, the Busan office and Daejeon office had 47 cases each, the Gwangju office had 44 cases, and the Daegu office had only 9 cases, leaving the total number of reports from non-capital regions at 147.

In fact, the reporting center has received cases such as individuals who received funds for purchasing an apartment from their parents but failed to report gift tax, suspected cases of avoiding taxes by holding real estate under someone else's name, and cases where capital gains tax was omitted despite receiving separate compensation during land sales.

The NTS plans to analyze the received reports in connection with its own taxation data and, if suspicions of tax evasion are confirmed, proceed with collection procedures through tax audits.

Representative Cha stated, “The fact that over 80% of the reports to the center are concentrated in the Capital Region means that public surveillance and awareness of problems regarding real estate transactions in the Capital Region are that high,” adding, “The NTS must verify the received reports quickly and strictly to ensure they lead to actual tax collection.”

Meanwhile, if a report on real estate tax evasion leads to tax collection, a reward is paid to the informant. The NTS includes those in the payment target if the collected tax amount is 50 million won or more, and pays differentially based on the scale of the evaded tax. The rates are: ▲20% for collected tax up to 500 million won ▲15% for over 500 million to 2 billion won ▲10% for over 2 billion to 3 billion won ▲5% of the excess for over 3 billion won, with rewards paid up to a maximum of 4 billion won.
