Local government officials deployed for election duties facing the risk of imprisonment and dismissal
During an incident in the 2014 local elections,
a level 7 official from Bucheon City was deployed as an election clerk.
Just before the polls closed, the number of voters did not match the number of ballots,
so they arbitrarily placed 9 remaining blank ballots into the ballot box without authorization.
In 2015, they were sentenced to 1 year and 6 months in prison, suspended for 2 years, for violating the Public Official Election Act.
(And naturally, they were dismissed from their civil service position)
At the time, the civil servants' union tried to provide relief, but there was no way to do so.
I'm not saying that person did the right thing lolololol
Tasks that carry the risk of imprisonment or dismissal if something goes wrong
are being handled by local government officials
for whom elections are not their primary duty > the official in question was from the Urban Department
without proper prior training.
They are deployed after a brief, inadequate training session,
and it seems something is wrong with the fact that the National Election Commission almost entirely escapes accountability.
